Turkey gives written statement on US naval ships

Ministry of Foreign Affairs said that "Spain, Germany, Poland and the United States requested our permission under the Convention for passage of their navy ships through the Turkish Straits to deliver humanitarian aid to Georgia."

Turkish Ministry of Foreign Affairs has said that the United States did not make any request for passage of its naval hospital ship USNS Comfort through the Turkish Straits.

Burak Ozugergin, spokesman for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, said in a written statement, "Turkey has been cooperating with the countries aiming at sending humanitarian relief supplies to Georgia."

"The United States did not make any request for passage of its naval hospital ship USNS Comfort through the Turkish Straits under the Montreux Convention," he said.

"Meanwhile, Spain, Germany, Poland and the United States requested our permission under the Convention for passage of their navy ships through the Turkish Straits to deliver humanitarian aid to Georgia," Ozugergin added.
