Turkey, Iraq meet over new customs gates

Turkish and Iraqi ministers met in Istanbul on Sunday to discuss new border crossings between the two countries.

Turkey's State Minister Hayati Yazici and Iraqi Minister of Trade Safaa Al Deen Al Safi debated opening of new border crossings between Turkey and Iraq during their one-hour meeting in Istanbul.

"Habur is the only operational border crossing between Iraq and Turkey, and ministries of trade and interior of the two countries have agreed to open two customs gates," Yazici told reporters after the meeting.

Yazici said it would be more advantageous for the two countries to open Ovakoy border crossing, instead of Sunava crossing, and the new customs gate would be a single crossing with two customs administrations.

"Delegations comprised of experts of the two countries will prepare a report, and then we will decide which door to open," he said.

Al Safi said opening of a new customs gate indicated that Turkish-Iraqi trade volume was increasing each passing day.
