Turkey is Iraq's door opening to Europe, says diplomat

A Turkish diplomat defined on Sunday Turkey as Iraq's door opening to Europe.

Huseyin Avni Botsali, Turkey's consul general in Mosul, said that Turkey was Iraq's door opening to Europe.

"This door will never be closed," Botsali said during a meeting of the Abant Platform in the Iraqi city of Irbil.

The meeting began on Sunday, and last for two days. Its theme is "seeking peace and future together."

The consul general said that Turkey had embraced Iraq when every one was running away from that country.

"If we do not put out the fire in our neighbor's garden, we cannot taste the fruit in that garden together," Botsali said.

Botsali also said that Turkey, the door of Iraq opening to Europe, would always remain open.

Sociologists, political scientists, authors, and researchers will debate common cultural values and future, mutual dependence and opportunities, and future perspective.

In the meeting, around 100 participants are expected to particularly discuss relations between Turkey and the regional administration in north of Iraq.

The meeting is expected to end after a statement is released on Monday.

The Abant Platform has been gathering in Turkey since 1998. It also shares its experience with several other centers.

The platform held a meeting in Washington D.C. in April 2004 on "Islam, Democracy and Secularism: Turkey Experience" in cooperation with Johns Hopkins University; another one at the European Parliament (EP) in Brussels with cooperation of Leuven University in December 2004. The meeting at the EP was on "Turkey's European Union (EU) Membership Process: Culture, Identity,Religion."
