"Turkey may fulfill its European Union (EU) requirements by 2011 rather than the planned 2013," said Ali Babacan, Turkish State Minister and Chief Negotiator for EU talks, on Wednesday.
Speaking at a seminar hosted by the Economic Development Foundation (IKV), Babacan stressed that "once Turkey says that it has completed all necessary reforms, the EU would have to make a prominent decision."
Babacan underlined that Turkey's EU membership will not resemble those of the 28th and 29th countries.
" Turkey is an economic giant with a big population," said Babacan.
In reference to recent Republic rallies throughout Turkey in which certain groups chanted against the EU, Babacan underscored that "such an attitude would make Turkey a North Korea. It is impossible to accept such chants."
"No matter what certain people say, Turkey will continue to prosper on the way to the EU," added Babacan.
