FIRST ROUND OF VOTING FOR PRESIDENT


The candidate who receives 367 votes in the first round of voting for president at the Turkish parliament on Monday will become Turkey's 11th president. There are three candidates running for the president: Justice and Development (AK) Party's Abdullah Gul, Nationalist Movement Party 's (MHP) Sabahattin Cakmakoglu and Democratic Left Party's (DSP) Tayfun Icli.


NEW MARKET FOR TURKISH CONTRACTORS: SUDAN

Turkish companies will participate in five fairs in Sudan that will take place in October, November and December. "Sudan is planning to invest 50 billion USD in the next five years. There is a great potential for Turkish contractors in Sudan," said Bilgin Aygul, the CEO of Turkish Forum Fairs.

GEORGIAN WORKERS IN HAZELNUT MARKET


Hundreds of workers from neighboring Georgia entered the Turkish market and are working to harvest hazelnuts in the Black Sea region. Each Georgian worker earns 25 YTL per day.


TURKISH EXPORTS TO NEIGHBORING COUNTRIES RISE BY 43.5 PERCENT

Turkish exports to neighboring countries grew 43.5 percent in the first six months of 2007 when compared to the same term last year. Total Turkish exports to neighboring countries was worth 18.4 billion USD.

PRESIDENT SHOULD BE ELECTED BEFORE THIRD ROUND


Justice & Development (AK) Party executives have been trying to convince parliamentarians of opposition parties for election of AK Party's candidate Abdullah Gul in the first two rounds of the presidential election. A total of 367 parliamentarians should vote for Gul to be elected the new president in the first round.


NO WATER CUT IN ANKARA

Ankara Mayor Melih Gokcek said that if residents in the capital continue to use water carefully and without wasting it, water will not be cut. Gokcek also thanked residents for their efforts.

Melih Gokcek, mayor of the Turkish capital Ankara, told that if Ankara residents continue to use water carefully and without wasting it, water supply may not be cut and interrupted until December, 2007. "If our citizens save water on a daily basis, there may not be a need to cut water supply," said Gokcek.


GULER: "OUR GOAL IS A SYSTEM PRESERVING MUTUAL RIGHTS"

"Our goal is to establish a system which is based on reciprocity of mutual rights and which protects both of the parties and the customers," said Turkish Energy & Natural Resources Minister Hilmi Guler on Sunday, regarding the cooperation to be established between Turkey and Iran on energy issue.

Guler, who is currently in Iran on a formal visit, met Acting Petroleum Minister of Iran Gulam Hussein Nozeri in capital Tehran.

After the 1.5-hour meeting, the two ministers held a joint press conference.

Guler indicated that the talks they held in Tehran were the ongoing steps of the process which started in Turkish capital of Ankara.

Meanwhile, Nozeri stated that they discussed about the operation of 22nd, 23rd and 24th phases of South Pars Natural Gas Field by Turkey during the talks, adding that Turkey would make investments within the framework of international agreements.

Nozeri also stressed that Turkey has permitted Iran to use its territory for the transfer of Iranian gas to Europe while Iran approved the Turkmen gas to be carried from Iranian territory to Turkey.

Noting that they would give 20 percent of the natural gas production in the 3 phases of South Pars Natural Gas Field to Turkey, Nozeri said, "our Turkish brothers will not face any problems concerning natural gas issue during the winter period".

MODERATE ISLAM MODEL WILL GAIN MOMENTUM WITH GUL'S ELECTION


Deputy Chairman of the main opposition Republican People's Party (CHP) Mustafa Ozyurek indicated that "moderate Islam model in Turkey will gain momentum with the election of Abdullah Gul as Turkey's new president". "Turkey is a secular, democratic republic. We want to help the republic stay alive," stressed Ozyurek.


CUKUROVA FOOD FAIR

The International Cukurova Food Fair will take place in southern province of Adana between September 5th and 9th, said CEO of the Adana Chamber of Commerce Saban Bas. Companies from 81 Turkish provinces, Moscow, Sofia, Aleppo, Tbilisi and Tehran will attend the fair.

SPK: "HOT MONEY DID NOT LEAVE TURKISH STOCK MARKET"


Capital Markets Board of Turkey (SPK) Chairman Turan Erol said that hot money did not leave Turkish stock market during fluctuations that took place in foreign markets. Erol stated that they closely monitored developments in financial markets in Turkey, and that there is no problem regarding growth expectations of the country.


$50 MLN EXPECTED FROM F1

President of Formula One Bernie Ecclestone who bought operating rights of Istanbul Park Course where Formula One races take place has been working hard for the race on August 24th-26th. The income that is expected to be obtained from F1 is 50 million USD.

FIRST ROUND TODAY


First round of presidential election in the parliament will be held today. Foreign Minister Abdullah Gul from Justice & Development (AK) Party , Sabahattin Cakmakoglu from the Nationalist Movement Party (MHP) and Tayfun Icli from the Democratic Left Party (DSP) will compete to become the 11th president of Turkey. First round voting will start in the Parliamentary General Assembly at 3.00 p.m. today. There is need for at least 367 parliamentarians in the general assembly to hold the first round of the presidential election.


TURKEY LEAVES BEHIND GERMANY IN E-GOVERNMENT SERVICES

According to a research that has been conducted in 198 countries, Turkey left behind several developed countries including Germany, Spain, Italy, Switzerland and Finland in e-government performances. Turkey earned the eighth place on a list that rated countries for their e-government performances.

ALIBEY DAM ALMOST DRY


The ongoing drought is ending water sources of Istanbul one by one. After Papucdere and Kazandere dams dried completely, Alibey Dam in Istanbul is also about to become completely dry. Although it has a capacity to store 36 million cubic meters of water, Alibey Dam has only 512,000 cubic meters of water left in store. Expecting a small amount of rain in September and October, authorities are cautious not to cause panic in Istanbul.


FIRST CONVENTION WITHOUT ECEVIT

The first Democratic Left Party (DSP) convention since demise of former leader Bulent Ecevit was the scene of sadness and happiness on Sunday. Zeki Sezer received the votes of 854 delegates and got re-elected the DSP Chairman. "We are sad to hold a convention without Ecevit. I am sure Ecevit is resting in peace. His people are here. Sleep peacefully Ecevit, we are in the parliament and your principles will continue to guide us," told Sezer.

SEZER-TOPTAN MEETING CANCELLED


President Ahmet Necdet Sezer earlier rejected the cabinet list of Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan, saying that the new president would approve the list. Sezer assumed a similar attitude to Parliament Speaker Koksal Toptan. A visit scheduled to be paid by Parliamentary Chairmanship Council members to the Presidential Palace on Monday has been cancelled. Ahmet Kucuk from the Republican People's Party (CHP) stated, "Sezer told Parliament Secretary General Ali Osman Koca during a meeting in the Presidential Palace that 'the new president will be elected soon and you should pay a visit to the new president."


HIJACKER HAS LINK TO AL-QAIDA

Mommen Abdul Aziz Talikh, one of the two people who hijacked the Atlasjet passenger plane during a flight from Lefkosa to Istanbul last Saturday had been trained in Al-Qaida camps. Executives from the Antalya Police Department said that Talikh, born in 1974, had been trained in Al-Qaida camps. Talikh had served jail time in the same prison with a person who was one of the terrorists that were involved in the planning of September 11th attacks and was sentenced to lifetime imprisonment in Saudi Arabia.
