NEW ARRANGEMENT AGAINST CHP

According to the new draft constitution, the main opposition party, Republican People's Party (CHP), cannot apply to the Constitutional Court to annul a law or a decree law. The draft constitution which has been prepared by a team of academicians who are headed by Prof. Dr. Ergun Ozbudun has several surprising provisions. One of them is that ruling party and main opposition party will not be able to apply to the Constitutional Court to invalidate a law. On the other hand, no ruling party has applied to the court so far to annul a law which it approved.


MASSA WINS TURKISH GP

Ferrari driver Brazilian Felipe Massa won the Formula 1 Petrol Ofisi Turkish Grand Prix. Massa was the winner also last year in Istanbul. Kimi Raikkonen finished the race second while defending world champion McLaren Mercedes' Spanish driver Fernando Alonso became third.

DROUGHT TO CONTINUE 2-3 YEARS

"Drought does not last one year. It continues 2 or 3 years just like aftershocks. Istanbul lives for the day. This issue is serious. A major crisis is on its way for 2008," said Professor Ilhan Avci of Istanbul Technical University (ITU).


MASSA WINS AGAIN

Ferrari driver Felipe Massa won the victory again in Formula 1 Petrol Ofisi Turkish Grand Prix. His teammate Finnish driver Kimi Raikonnen came the second. Last year's champion driver McLaren's Fernando Alonso was ranked the third in the race.


2 AWARDS TO TURKEY

Jury of Sarajevo Film Festival, presided by British actor Jeremy Irons has chosen the "Takva", a Turkish film directed by Ozer Kiziltan, the best film of the festival. Turkish actress Saadet Isil Aksoy was awarded the best actress for her role in "Yumurta" (Egg) directed by Semih Kaplanoglu.

IMF TO CONTINUE SUPERVISING TURKISH ECONOMY

Finance Minister Kemal Unakitan, who is expected to coordinate economy in the new cabinet, said that they will ask the International Monetary Fund (IMF) to supervise Turkish economy in the new period instead of seeking new loans.

"We do not need to get loan from the IMF any longer. But this does not mean that we will put an end to our relations. We will ask them to continue supervising Turkish economy," Unakitan said.


ERDOGAN VOWS TO FIGHT AGAINST MAFIA

Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan has vowed to fight against mafia and all kinds of criminal gangs. "Otherwise, they will begin ruling us once again," he said.

RIGHT TO "STRIP OFF IMMUNITY"

There are several options on political immunity in draft constitution. One of these options is that deputies will be able to ask the parliament to strip off their political immunity. A parliamentarian can submit a petition to the Parliament Speaker's Office for his/her political immunity to be lifted in regard to an ongoing lawsuit. According to this option, a parliamentarian can have this right and appear before the court through decision of the Parliament's Speaker Office.


ERDOGAN ADDRESSES RESIDENTS OF RIZE

Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan who addressed residents of northeastern city of Rize said that he aimed to serve all Turkish people without making any discrimination. Erdogan noted that now they will work to boost democracy, adding that on the 100th anniversary of the Republic, Turkey will be a more developed country.

GUL'S EFFECT IN ELECTIONS

Percentage of electorate, who took into consideration Abdullah Gul's future presidency while casting votes, is 18.5.

A survey conducted by Tarhan Erdem's Konda for Milliyet, shows that results of previous presidential election had an effect (positive or negative) on 29.6 percent of electorate regarding their choices.

Economic conditions had effect on 85.2 percent of Justice & Development (AK) Party voters, corruption had effect on 35.9 percent. Abdullah Gul had effect on 32.5 percent of AK Party voters.

12 percent of electorate will change their votes in case of an election today. AK Party will rise to 54.1 percent, Republican People's Party (CHP) will fall to 18.9, and Nationalist Movement Party (MHP) will remain the same.


SAMBA AT ISTANBUL PARK

Ferrari and Massa have won two successive victories in the last two years in Istanbul that hosted Formula 1 races for the third time this year. Grandstands were empty because of hot weather and high ticket prices. The event did not have a "TRNC crisis" as Turkish State Minister and Deputy Prime Minister Mehmet Ali Sahin presented the trophy.

"ISTANBUL IS WHERE MY CAREER MADE A SWITCH"

Ferrari driver Felipe Massa won his second consecutive Turkish Grand Prix. The Brazilian driver won his first Grand Prix in Istanbul in 2006. "This is becoming a special place for me," Massa said of the Istanbul Park circuit. He said, "I love the track. This is where my career made a switch and I started winning races."

Massa beat his teammate Kimi Raikkonen by just over two seconds as the Ferrari pair dueled from the opening turn. Two-time defending Formula One champion Fernando Alonso of McLaren was third.

After the 58-lap race, Massa was 2.2 seconds ahead of Raikkonen, with Alonso 26 seconds back.


TURKISH FIRMS TO INVEST IN EGYPT

Executives of 71 leading Turkish firms such as Sabanci, Yasar, Vestel and Sanko left for Egypt to hold a series of talks. Those firms are planning to make investments in Cairo.

"GANGS WILL BE ERADICATED"

Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan said in his hometown Rize that they will never let gangs and mafia grow in Turkey. "We will achieve this goal hand in hand with our people," he said.

"Our businessmen have been complaining about gangs. Our police and gendarmerie forces achieved great success. Our fight will continue. We will never let anyone disturb our people," he added.


FLOODS HIT AGAIN

Floods damaged 50 houses and workplaces in Akdagmadeni town of central city of Yozgat. Some of these houses were completely destroyed. Tens of motor vehicles were carried away in floods.

HIS FIRST GOAL IS EU

Foreign Minister Abdullah Gul, who is getting prepared to become the 11th president of Turkey, put forth the signs of the vision that he will follow in regard to the foreign policy on his website. An article written by Gul focused on two goals. "The first goal is to become an integral part of the EU. The other is to settle an atmosphere of security, stability, prosperity, friendship and cooperation around the country," he said.


RAINY WEATHER ON THE WAY

There will be heavy rain in Turkey which went through difficult days due to drought. There will be rain in central, eastern and northern parts of the country. On the other hand, meteorology executives warned residents of Istanbul against floods.

The new constitution authorizes the High Tribunal to try parliament speaker, chief of the General Staff, and commanders of Land, Air, Naval and Gendarmerie Forces.


5.4-MAGNITUDE EARTHQUAKE JOLTS BINGOL

An earthquake measuring 5.4 on the Richter scale jolted the eastern city of Bingol. The quake, which was centered on the town of Karliova, sent residents out to the streets in panic. Six people who jumped out of windows were injured.


"TAKVA" WINS HEART OF SARAJEVO

Turkish director Ozer Kiziltan's film "Takva" was chosen as the best movie at the 13th Sarajevo Film Festival. The jury headed by British actor Jeremy Irons, awarded "Takva (A Man's Fear of God)" with the "Heart of Sarajevo Award" of 25,000 euros at the closing ceremony.

Meanwhile, Saadet Isil Aksoy of Turkey was awarded the best actress for her role in "Yumurta (Egg)" directed by Semih Kaplanoglu.

The festival showed over 170 features and short and documentary films during the past seven days. Big industry names, such as French Oscar-winner Juliette Binoche and U.S. documentary director Michael Moore, also presented their latest films.
