GUL: AK PARTY'S CANDIDATE

Re-nomination of Foreign Minister & Deputy Prime Minister Abdullah Gul as the Justice & Development (AK) Party's candidate for president has been welcomed. Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan expressed his belief that the process could be finalized without escalating tension. Gul will hold talks with leaders of the opposition parties today. He will first meet Nationalist Movement Party (MHP) Chairman Devlet Bahceli.

BARZANI TAKES A STEP BACK

Kurdish leaders who refused to recognize the "memorandum of understanding to fight against terrorism" signed between Turkey and Iraq last week, have changed their minds after meeting with Iraqi Prime Minister Nuri Al-Maliki. Foreign Minister Hoshyar Zebari said that neither President Jalal Talabani nor Iraqi Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP) Chairman Mahmoud Barzani rejected the ban on activities of the terrorist organization PKK.

The capital city of Ankara lived through critical hours yesterday. First, the Council of Ministers convened. Then, members of the ruling Justice & Development Party (AK Party) Central Executive Board met. Foreign Minister & Deputy Prime Minister Abdullah Gul's candidacy for president was high on agenda of both meetings. Gul, who will hold talks with leaders of the opposition parties, got the first appointment with the Nationalist Movement Party (MHP).

HORRYFYING ACCIDENT IN ISTANBUL STRAIT

A ferry named Salih Reis-4 rammed head-on into a Ukrainian-flagged freighter ship anchored off Zeytinburnu district of Istanbul. 48 ferry passengers were injured in the accident. One of them is in critical condition.

CONGRATULATIONS ABDULLAH GUL!

The ruling Justice and Development (AK) Party has decided to nominate only one candidate for president, Abdullah Gul. AK Party will not nominate another name for president. Gul will meet executives of the opposition Nationalist Movement Party (MHP) at 11:30 a.m. on Tuesday morning and ask for their support. MHP believes that Gul will be elected as president in the third round in the parliament.

THREE MINISTERS TO WORK ON THY STRIKE

Speaking to reporters after the Council of Ministers meeting on Monday, State Minister and Deputy Prime Minister Mehmet Ali Sahin indicated that the issue of Turkish Airlines and a possible strike by THY employees came up at their meeting. "Minister of Labor and Social Security Murat Basesgioglu, Minister of Finance Kemal Unakitan and I have established a committee to help resolve the THY strike matter," said Sahin

SINGLE CANDIDATE FOR PRESIDENCY: GUL

The ruling Justice and Development (AK) Party will appoint Foreign Minister and Deputy Prime Minister Abdullah Gul as its sole candidate for the presidency. AK Party will file Gul's candidacy for the president at the parliament on Tuesday. Gul will tour the opposition parties along with two ministers and request the support of opposition parties for his candidacy.

CLOSE CALL FOR 449 PASSENGERS

A sea bus in Istanbul collided with a cargo ship at around 10:50 a.m. on Monday morning. 449 passengers on board the sea bus feared for their lives. Fortunately, there were no serious casualties. 40 passengers were slightly injured in the accident. The sea bus has serious damage.

Foreign Minister & Deputy Prime Minister Abdullah Gul has not taken a step back from his presidential candidacy. The ruling Justice & Development (AK) Party re-nominated Gul as its candidate to stand in the presidential election next week after Gul told Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan at the AK Party Central Executive Board meeting that he is determined to run for presidency. Gul will hold talks with leaders of the opposition parties to request them to support him in the voting. If Gul is elected, he will be the first president whose wife wears headscarf.

ERDOGAN TO SUBMIT LIST OF CABINET TO PRESIDENT SEZER

State Minister & Deputy Prime Minister Mehmet Ali Sahin said after the Council of Ministers meeting that Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan could submit the list of the new cabinet to President Ahmet Necdet Sezer on Thursday. Ali Babacan will possibly become the new foreign minister. Meanwhile, Ertugrul Gunay, Zafer Caglayan, Mehmet Simsek, Veysel Eroglu, Faruk Celik and Bulent Arinc are expected to take part in the new cabinet.

Although there were speculations that the Justice and Development (AK) Party may nominate more than one candidate for president, the Council of Ministers and the Central Executive Board of the AK Party on Monday decided to nominate only Foreign Minister and Deputy Prime Minister Abdullah Gul as the sole candidate for president. Gul is expected to visit opposition parties on Tuesday and ask for their support to his candidacy.

FIVE TURKISH UNIVERSITIES AMONG WORLD'S BEST

Newsweek magazine published the names of the best 500 universities in the world. There are five Turkish universities among the world's best 500 universities: Istanbul University, Sabanci, Istanbul Technical University, Bilkent and Cukurova University.

ARE CELL PHONES RESPONSIBLE?

A ferry named Salih Reis-4 rammed head-on into an Ukrainian-flagged freighter ship anchored off Zeytinburnu district of Istanbul, injuring 49 ferry passengers. The ferry, although damaged, returned to dock in Istanbul shortly after the accident. Ambulances and helicopters took the injured to nearby hospitals. None of the injured is in life-threatening condition. A full investigation is under way to find the cause of the accident. Some claim that use of cell phones by some passengers caused the accident.

AGAINST GUL DEFINITELY

Chairman of the main opposition Republican People's Party (CHP) Deniz Baykal indicated on Monday that Foreign Minister and Deputy Prime Minister Abdullah Gul, who has been declared as a candidate for president, has a political line that does not show that he has digested the principles the Turkish Republic has been founded on. "Anyone with the right mindset may become the president. I do not care what the spouse of the new president would wear," said Baykal. I am against the would-be presidency of Gul, stressed Baykal.

NEW CABINET TO BE ESTABLISHED ON THURSDAY

Speaking to reporters after the Council of Ministers meeting on Monday, Turkish Deputy Prime Minister Mehmet Ali Sahin indicated that Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan may present the list of the new cabinet to President Ahmet Necdet Sezer on Thursday.

The ruling Justice & Development (AK) Party has decided to nominate Foreign Minister & Deputy Prime Minister Abdullah Gul again for president. Gul is expected to hold talks with chairmen of the political parties to seek compromise. Gul will first pay a visit to Nationalist Movement Party (MHP) Chairman Devlet Bahceli at 11.30 p.m. MHP Secretary-General Cihan Pacaci said earlier that they do not want the presidential election to give rise to another chaos in Turkey. Republican People's Party (CHP) Chairman Deniz Baykal turned down Gul's request for an appointment. Meanwhile, Democratic Society Party (DTP) Deputy Group Chairman Ahmet Turk said that they will decide after meeting with Gul. He added that they did not have any prejudice.

The accident caused panic among passengers of the ferry. Authorities did not give any information about cause of the accident.
