CONSULT US BEFORE ENTERING
Gen. George Casey, the Chief of Staff of the U.S. Army, said he believes that Turkey would have consultations with the Pentagon before it enters into north of Iraq. Taking the floor in the National Press Council, Casey said that war that has continued for six years since September 11th terrorist attacks unbalanced U.S. Land Forces Command, and both soldiers and their families are demoralized when the mandate of troops in Iraq is prolonged.
BOTH IN WORDS AND ESSENSE
PM Recep Tayyip Erdogan said, "Mr. Abdullah Gul is aware of sensitivities of institutions. Every one with good will should know that Mr. Gul is a reliable and sincere person. He is an ideal candidate for president with his personal characteristics. He will contribute to efforts of the institutions, the sensitivities of which he knows well." Erdogan defended headscarf in the Presidential Palace by showing Mrs. Latife Hanim and Mrs. Zubeyde Hanim (Ataturk's wife and mother) as example. Replying a question on Abdullah Gul's wife who is wearing a headscarf, Erdogan said, "look at the wife and mother of our first President Ataturk. If you want to see an example, look how Ataturk's wife was dressing. And this will be a lesson for you."
Upon comments which said that there might be tension in the Cankaya Presidential Palace due to Foreign Minister Abdullah Gul's wife who wears headscarf, Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan said, "people should look at Ataturk's mother Zubeyde and wife Latife." After Justice & Development (AK) Party Central Executive Board meeting, Erdogan held a surprising news conference. "Abdullah Gul (the presidential candidate of AK Party) is a statesman who will represent this office well with his deep experience, charisma and good reputation," Erdogan noted.
NO RAIN IN AUTUMN
Meteorology authorities said that temperatures will also be above the seasonal averages in September and October. Rain during autumn will not be at a level which will end drought in Marmara, Aegean and Central Anatolia regions.
ALEX PAVES WAY FOR NEXT ROUND
Fenerbahce beat Anderlecht 1-0 and gained the upper hand for the second leg to be played two weeks later in Belgium.
Fenerbahce who planned on winning the match without conceding a goal at home, had a hard time at the second half of the match where they took the lead with captain Alex's neat header. Goalkeeper Serdar was the man of the match with the three saves he made. Kezman drew criticism with his bad performance and consecutive losses.
HE RECEIVED SUPPPORT OF CIVIL SOCIETY
Abdullah Gul, the presidential candidate of Justice and Development (AK) Party who previously visited the political parties toured labour unions and NGOs yesterday.

Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan who was silent about Foreign Minister Abdullah Gul's candidacy for president held a surprising news conference on Wednesday. Erdogan said, "I believe in and rely on our presidential candidate Abdullah Gul. He is a statesman who will properly represent this office with his deep experience, career, charisma and good reputation." Erdogan stated, "Abdullah Gul is reliable and sincere. He will work to maintain harmony and cooperation among state institutions."

DOUBLE ADVANTAGE IN EUROPE
Fenerbahce of Turkey defeated Anderlecht 1-0 with Alex's goal at their home ground in Kadikoy, Istanbul in the UEFA Champions League 3rd qualifying round first leg. On the other hand Turkey's other representative Besiktas who are competing to advance to the Champions League drew 1-1 with the Swiss team Zurich in the away first leg where it held the lead for the majority of the game.

FOREIGNERS SELL, MARKETS SHAKEN
The tense atmosphere at the world markets and the uncertainty caused by Abdullah Gul's candidacy hit Turkey. The suggestion of one of the biggest bond funds of the world advising investors not to buy bonds in Turkey put the market in fire. Pimco listed the countries that would be effected the most by the rise in financing costs as Turkey, Argentine, Ecuador, Hungary and Lebanon.
ERDOGAN: GUL IS RELIABLE AND SINCERE
PM Recep Tayyip Erdogan said, "Mr. Abdullah Gul is an ideal candidate for president. The support our nation extended during the election rallies is meaningful. Everybody knows that Gul is a reliable and sincere person. All parties should be present at the parliament (the day of the presidential election)." On the other hand, Erdogan said, "I will present the cabinet list to the president tomorrow (Thursday). There will be two more state ministers in the cabinet. I am the person that knows whom to appoint to which position. I believe the president would approve it."
I AM THE ONE TO BE ELECTED, NOT MY WIFE
Abdullah Gul, who separately visited NGOs including Turk-Is, Hak-Is, TOBB, TISK and DISK, said, "my wife will not be the president" when asked if "his wife would draw reaction of the military". Gul noted, "I will deal with my own matters and know how to behave." Asked his views about the discussions on August 30th reception due to headscarf issue, Gul said, "I think they (discussions) are unnecessary. You will see (what will happen) then."
CALL FOR COMPROMISE
Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan held a news conference after the Justice & Development (AK) Party Central Executive Board meeting. Erdogan said, "we should unite under basic qualities of the Republic, values of our nation and our goals for the future to make Turkey a more prosperous country."
FULL SUPPORT FROM NGOs
Executives from Turkish Confederation of Labor Unions (Turk-Is), Moral Rights Workers' Union (Hak-Is), Union of Chambers & Commodity Exchanges of Turkey (TOBB), and Turkish Confederation of Employers' Unions (TISK) welcomed Foreign Minister Abdullah Gul's candidacy for the president. TOBB Chairman Rifat Hisarciklioglu said, "Gul has all skills that the president should have."
RETURN SIGNAL FROM AGAR
Mehmet Agar, who resigned as the chairman of the Democrat Party (DP) due to election defeat, signalled on Wednesday that he may return to the party. Agar sent a note to the party administration and announced that he will stay at the top of the party until a convention.
GUL TO BE IN NEW CABINET
It has been learned that PM Recep Tayyip Erdogan will include FM Abdullah Gul in the new cabinet list he will submit to the Presidential Palace today, as a gesture. Erdogan, who will establish two new state ministries, will charge one of them with water issues and the other with minerals. Asked if President Sezer will intervene in the cabinet list, Erdogan said, "I am setting up a team. I will work with them. They are not civil servants, they are elected people."
FULL SUPPORT TO GUL
Abdullah Gul, visited the labour and employers' unions and told what kind of a president he would be and asked for their moral support.
Chairman of Turk-Is: Everybody should respect the manifestation of the people's will.
Chairman of Hak-Is: To embrace the will of the people is to embrace democracy.
Chairman of The Union of Chambers and Commodity Exchanges of Turkey (TOBB): Mr. Gul will fulfill the requirements of the post by all means.
WATER AND OIL MINISTRY
PM Erdogan will submit the list of new council of ministers to President Sezer today. Gul's name is also on the list. Gul will continue to serve as a minister until he is elected president.
One of the two new ministries to be founded will be transformed to 'water and oil' ministry later. There are also two women in the council of ministers.
