HE COULD NOT BE ELECTED IN FIRST ROUND

Abdullah Gul, the presidential candidate of the Justice & Development (AK) Party, could not get 367 votes, required to be elected in the first round of voting. Gul won 341 votes while other candidates Sabahattin Cakmakoglu got 70 and Tayfun Icli only 13. All political parties --- except the Republican People's Party (CHP) --- joined the voting. Every part of the society is reacting to Yusuf Halacoglu, the Chairman of the Turkish History Society (TTK). Halacoglu said that "Kurds are Turks and Alawites are Armenians". This even drew reaction of the Justice & Development (AK) Party. Dengir Mir Mehmet Firat of AK Party said, "this is a racist approach, the prosecutors should take action." On the other hand, AK Party MP Reha Camuroglu called on Prof. Halacoglu to resign.

REPROACH FROM ERDOGAN: SEZER HAS BLOCKED OUR PATH

PM Recep Tayyip Erdogan criticized President Ahmet Necdet Sezer in a meeting with MPs from his AK Party. He said, "he has not approved any of our appointments since July 22nd, saying that this is a temporary government. He signed the decisions of the Supreme Military Council although National Defense Minister and I put our signatures under it. Isn't this a contradiction? Isn't this blocking our path?"

TURKIYE

NO SURPRISE, PROCESS CONTINUES

367 quorum crisis was overcome, and Abdullah Gul got 341 votes in the first round of presidential election. "367 WAS WRONG" CONFESSION FROM SEZER

President Ahmet Necdet Sezer said that it was wrong to seek a quorum of 367 for the first two rounds of the presidential election. "Participation of 184 MPs is enough," Sezer stated. It has once more proved with Sezer's words that laws were interpreted forcefully and this caused the "367 crisis" that locked Turkey and pushed it into a military statement discussion. Sezer asked PM Erdogan to withdraw the referendum on constitutional amendment that reduces the quorum from 367 to 184, and said, "participation of 184 MPs is enough. 367 discussions were wrong."
