ECONOMY ON THE RIGHT PATH
Guler Sabanci, president of Sabanci Holding, said Turkey has gained 5 more years with the results of July 22nd elections. "Stability and successful policies strengthened the basis of Turkish economy. Recent global fluctuation could not manage to damage strong Turkish economy," Guler Sabanci remarked.
Anti-Defamation League (ADL), one of the most important Jewish institutions in the United States, changed its stance towards the Armenian allegations on 1915 incidents and decided to acknowledge the allegations in questions. ADL President Abraham Foxman said in a statement posted on group's web-site that his organization had come to share the view that the incidents "were indeed tantamount to genocide," but adding that the organization maintained its opposition against bringing the issue to Congressional floor. Releasing a written statement, Turkish Jewish Community expressed regret over the decision of ADL.
U.S. JEWISH ORGANIZATION ACKNOWLEDGES SO-CALLED GENOCIDE
One of the most important Jewish organizations in the USA, the Anti-Defamation League (ADL) backed the Armenian's so-called genocide allegations, while this was regretted by the Turkish Jewish Community. The Turkish Jewish Community said that they have difficulty in understanding this sudden change in ADL's view and noted that this stance only binds the ADL.
ANKARA GETS INVOLVED IN IRAQ AGAIN, TO HOST SUNNI LEADERS
After Iraq is dragged into a political instability as Sunnis withdraw from the government, Turkey decided to launch new initiatives. Iraqi Vice-President Tariq al-Hashimi will pay a visit to Ankara in coming days.
MR. BAYKAL GOES THROUGH CRISIS AGAIN
Republican People's Party (CHP) chairman Deniz Baykal blamed the opposition parties which recently entered the parliament, for "not causing any crisis". Meanwhile, Nationalist Movement Party (MHP) and Democratic Left Party (DSP) reacted harshly upon CHP's insistence on calling the parties not to participate in the presidential election.
SABANCI TO PURCHASE MIGROS FROM KOC
Sabanci Holding desires to purchase Migros which has been put on sale by the Koc Group. Guler Sabanci, chairperson of Executive Board of Sabanci Holding, indicated that they were interested in the Ramstores operating in Russia as well. Moreover, underscoring the importance of stability, Sabanci said, "The country gained 5 years with the latest general elections. Our per capita income may rise up to 10,000 USD".
NO HAND-OVER CEREMONY AT PRESIDENTIAL PALACE
In case Abdullah Gul is elected the president in the third round of voting next Tuesday, he will go to the Presidential Palace on Wednesday and formally take over the office from President Ahmet Necdet Sezer. Upon Sezer's instruction, no hand-over ceremony will be held. Thus, Sezer will hand over the post to Gul in the office of the president instead of the ceremony hall.
According to sources, President Sezer's wife Semra Sezer will not be in the Presidential Palace when Gul goes there. And Abdullah Gul's wife Hayrunnisa Gul will go to the Presidential Palace after Sezer leaves the building. When Suleyman Demirel handed over the office to Sezer seven years ago, a glorious ceremony was held. 1,500 people, including former president Kenan Evren, commanders, prime minister, ministers and foreign diplomats participated in that ceremony.
SABANCI: WE ARE WILLING TO BUY MIGROS
Guler Sabanci, the Chairperson of Executive Board of Sabanci Holding, announced that her holding is interested in Migros, which has been put on sale by the Koc Group. If CarrefourSA purchases Migros, the Sabanci Holding will raise their share in retail market from 14 to 35 percent. Migros' sale process will begin in September.
BAYKAL REACTS "ERDOGAN SPOILS"
Reacting to the statements of Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan that "those who don't see Abdullah Gul as President should quit citizenship", Republican People's Party (CHP) leader Deniz Baykal said, "this mentality administers Turkey. This is spoiling, and going beyond limits." Many institutions, organizations and citizens reacted against the statements of the Prime Minister. Chairman of Istanbul Bar wanted Erdogan to apologize.
AUTHORITY RETOUCH TO SOVEREIGNTY
140-article constitutional package, prepared by 6 constitutional jurists, was submitted to Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan. In the draft, it was proposed to use "legislative, executive and judicial bodies" instead of the "authorized organs" in the provision, "Turkish nation uses its sovereignty with the principles put forward by the constitution and through authorized organs."
HALACOGLU: MINE IS A PRIVATE STUDY
Turkish Historical Society (TTK) chairman Yusuf Halacoglu, whose recent remarks stating that he had the list of Armenians who had to convert their religion and get Turkish names in the past raised reactions in Turkey, blamed the media for distorting his words. Upon a question on why he did not make public his research on the issue, Halacoglu said he did not want to bother modest people and added, "it is a private study. I do not know if the government has such a list or not".
SABANCI: 10,000 USD INCOME NOT A DREAM
Guler Sabanci, the Chairperson of Executive Board of Sabanci Holding, stated that the public voted for stability. "With reforms on social security, economy and education, the dream of reaching a per capita income of 10,000 USD could become true".
SOME OF THEM TO LOSE IMMUNITY
The draft "civilian constitution" --- prepared by the Justice & Development (AK) Party --- includes some arrangements that will weaken the immunity of MPs and public executives. The draft was prepared by six lecturers headed by Prof. Dr. Ergun Ozbudun of the Bilkent University. If it is backed by AK Party administration, MPs will lose their immunity in crimes that are considered an obstacle before being elected under the Article 76 of the Constitution.
These crimes are embezzlement, forgery, corruption in tenders, terrorism and bribery. Prosecutors can take direct action against those who commit these crimes after being elected. However, the Parliament General Assembly will decide whether or not to "arrest" an MP at the end of an investigation and trial.
367 DENIAL FROM SEZER
During his meeting with MPs the previous day, PM Recep Tayyip Erdogan said, "also President Ahmet Necdet Sezer finds wrong quorum of 367 (required for the parliament session in which presidential election will be held). The Presidential Palace released a statement afterwards in which it said, "Mr. President did not say anything like that."
SURPRISING SUPPORT TO ARMENIAN THESIS
Anti-Defamation League (ADL), one of the most influential organizations of the Jewish lobby, has decided to acknowledge the Armenian allegations on the 1915 incidents. Turkey reacted harshly upon such decision. ADL which stood against the Armenian allegations in a determined way up until now, recently claimed that what Ottoman Armenians have experienced was a genocide "in terms of the consequences". Meanwhile, ADL's stance concerned Turkish capital of Ankara. Turkish MFA described such decision as an "unrespectful act against the memory of the victims of the Holocaust".
HANDOVER WITHOUT CEREMONY
Premier Recep Tayyip Erdogan stated that President Ahmet Necdet Sezer desired the handover of presidency to take place without a ceremony. During his party's Central Executive Board (MYK) meeting, Erdogan said, "Mr.Sezer told me that he wanted to handover presidency simply and without a ceremony". Throughout the history of republic, handover ceremonies could only take place twice due to military interventions, health problems and death.
Two important Jewish communities in the United States, who so far said there was not Armenian genocide, made a statement on Wednesday and said it would acknowledge Armenian allegations on the 1915 incidents in Ottoman Turkey. President of Anti-Defamation League Abraham Foxman had given the Boldness Award to Turkish Prime Minister Tayyip Erdogan during his visit to the United States.
The award was given in honor of the Turkish diplomats who saved the lives of Jews during the 2nd World War. "We continue to firmly believe that a Congressional resolution on such matters is a counterproductive diversion and will not foster reconciliation between Turks and Armenians and may put at risk the Turkish Jewish community and the important multilateral relationship between Turkey, Israel and the United States," Foxman said. REJECT "EITHER LOVE OR LEAVE"
Prime Ministry issued a statement for the expression of Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan that, "if you don't acknowledge Abdullah Gul as the President, quit Turkish citizenship." The Prime Ministry statement said, "the prime minister wanted to remind that rejecting an elected president would not be possible with respect to citizenship law. He does not approve "either love or leave" understanding, either.
