Turkey rejects Med Union reference in Euromed meeting

In line with Turkey's objection, the final declaration was released without making any reference to "the Mediterranean Union" and it sufficed to say that the outcome of Wednesday's Euromed meeting "contributed to the Paris summit."

Turkey rejects Med Union reference in Euromed meeting
Turkish government objected on Wednesday to a reference to "Mediterranean Union" in the final declaration of a meeting of the European-Mediterranean (Euromed) trade ministers in Marseilles, France.

Turkish State Minister Kursad Tuzmen, who represented Turkey in the meeting, rejected the inclusion of the phrase that the Euromed meeting "would contribute to the preparations for the Paris summit of Union for the Mediterranean," which is scheduled for July 13.

Tuzmen had conveyed Turkey's objection to French Trade Minister Anne-Marie Idrac as well as to European Commission representatives, demanding the removal of the reference or Turkey would place a reservation in the final declaration, diplomatic sources said.

In line with Turkey's objection, the final declaration was released without making any reference to "the Mediterranean Union" and it sufficed to say that the outcome of Wednesday's Euromed meeting "contributed to the Paris summit."
