Turkey says ranks 14 in world defense spending

Turkey's National Defense Minister Vecdi Gonul has said that Turkey allocated 1.9 percent of its national income to defense and security expenditures in 2007 and was ranked the 14th in the world behind Brazil and Iran.

Speaking at "Sinerjiturk-Defense'08" meeting hosted by Sinerjiturk Platform in the southern province of Antalya, Gonul said, "Turkey's defense industry has grown considerably in the last five years. More investments were made especially in design and development in this sector."

"Defense expenditures in the world increased by nearly 50 percent and surpassed 1.3 trillion USD in the last decade," he informed participants.

"The geography surrounding our country and requirements of defense and security in our region entail Turkey to be more prepared than many European countries. It is one of indispensable strategic targets of Turkey to create self-sufficient defense industry sector," Gonul added.

Turkish Defense Industry Undersecretary Murad Bayar said that annual sales by the Turkish defense industry exceeded 2 billion USD. "I believe that Turkish defense industry will become an important actor in the world after its annual sales surpass 3 billion USD soon," he said.

Meanwhile, SinerjiTurk Platform Chairman Abdullah Rasit Gulhan said that they aimed at turning Turkey into a technology center. "The defense industry is the most important factor to this end," he said.
