Turkey has swept land mines in a southeastern town to open a new border crossing at its border with Syria, an executive of the company that cleaned the mines, said on Friday.
Turkey's TUSAN Yapi Sanayi (construction industry company) won the tender opened to clean an area in Nusaybin town of the southeastern province of Mardin in order to construct a new border crossing.
A technical team, comprised of six people including an expert from TUSAN's German partner TAUBER, cleaned land mines in an area of 20 hectares with its mine-sweeping devices, and destroyed 310 anti-personnel, 35 anti-tank mines and a grenade.
"We totally cleared the area from mines in 26 days," Siddik Ozdemir, the director general of Tauber company, told AA correspondent.
Ozdemir said that land mines across Turkey-Syria border could be cleared in five years.
