Turkey, Syria aim to create single economic area
Turkish state minister said that Turkey should not close itself to the outer world during the current global crisis.
Turkish state minister for foreign trade said on Tuesday that Turkey should not close itself to the outer world during the current global crisis.
"We cannot close our doors and wait just because there is a crisis. We cannot move forward if we close ourselves down and do not see the outer world," Tuzmen said, speaking at the "Turkish-Syrian Businessmen Forum" held at Dedeman Damascus Hotel.
Tuzmen said that increasing the amount of trade was the only way to overcome the crisis.
He also said protective policies should not be implemented during times of crisis, adding that free trade should be encouraged instead.
Commenting on the relations between Turkey and Syria as well, Tuzmen said that the main goal was to create a single economic area between the countries.
Noting that the trade volume between Turkey and Syria reached 1.8 billion USD, Tuzmen said the free trade agreement between the two countries was an example of the "win-win strategy" which was beneficial for both parties.
