Turkey-Syria trade volume increases after joint council

The head of Turkish-Syrian Business Council said on Saturday that the trade volume between Turkey and Syria increased by nearly 3 times after the establishment of a joint business council by the countries in 2000.

Foreign Economic Relations Board (DEIK) of Turkey released a statement on the economic relations between Turkey and Syria, citing Turkish-Syrian Business Council chairperson Ruhsar Pekcan's opinions on the issue.

"Before 2000, the trade volume between Turkey and Syria was around 250-300 million USD. However, after the Turkish-Syrian Business Council was set up, such figure rose up to 750-800 million USD," Pekcan said.

Pekcan also said the trade volume between the countries was approximately 1.8 billion USD in 2008, adding that the council desired such figure to reach 2.5 billion USD in 2009.
