Turkey's chief negotiator for European Union (EU) talks said on Tuesday that Turkey would declare a civil society day.

Egemen Bagis, Turkey's state minister and chief negotiator, said that Turkey would declare March 6 as a civil society day.

"Turkey will announce March 6 as a civil society day for initiatives regarding the EU," Bagis told a meeting on "Talking Turkey: A European Union (EU) Communication Strategy for Turkey and Turkey's Communication Strategy for the EU."

The meeting is jointly organized by the Union of Chambers & Commodity Exchanges of Turkey (TOBB), Economic Policy Research Foundation of Turkey (TEPAV), Rome-based International Affairs Institute, and European Economic & Social Committee.

Bagis said the government would invite all non-governmental organizations who wanted to contribute to this activity.

"I will listen to their views, and I am sure we will develop new opinions and projects in this meeting," he said.

Bagis earlier met Margot Wallstrom, the vice president of the European Commission for institutional relations and communication strategy, Jacek Saryusz-Wolski, the chairman of the Committee on Foreign Affairs of the European Parliament; Turkey rapporteur Ria Oomen-Ruijten; Joost Lagendijsk, the co-chairman of Turkey-EU Joint Parliament Committee; and Antonio Tajani, the vice president of the European Commission for transport.

Egemen Bagis also had talks with Guenter Verheugen, the vice president of the European Commission for enterprise and industry; and Andris Piebalgs, the European commissioner for energy.

Bagis is expected to hold a press conference on Wednesday.
