Turkey to lanuch 2010 European capital of culture activities

Istanbul 2010 European Capital of Culture activities will be launched on Saturday.

The activities will begin with an official ceremony at the Halic Congress Center on January 16.

In November 2006, a European Union (EU) committee declared Istanbul, together with Pecs city of Hungary and Essen city of Germany, as the European Capital of Culture for 2010.

Turkish President Abdullah Gul and Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan, as well as ministers from 20 countries, will participate in the ceremony.

Not only shows but also concerts of Turkish singers will take place on Saturday.

Culture and arts centers and museums in Istanbul, particularly Sakip Sabanci Museum, Asiyan Museum, Sadberk Hanim Museum and Yerebatan Cistern Museum, will be open till midnight on Saturday.

The European Capital of Culture is a city designated by the EU for a period of one calendar year during which it is given a chance to showcase its cultural life and cultural development.
