Turkey votes against extention of UN Cyprus force

The United Nations (UN) Security Council extended on Monday the peace force mission in Cyprus for six months.

The council adopted a resolution that expanded the mandate of the UN Peacekeeping Force in Cyprus (UNFICYP) for six more months.

Turkey voted against the resolution, whereas the other 14 members voted for the resolution.

Thus, UNFICYP's mandate will last till June 15, 2010.

UNFICYP was set up in 1964 to prevent recurrence of fighting between the Greek Cypriot and Turkish Cypriot communities and to contribute to the maintenance and restoration of law and order.

The force remains on the island to supervise ceasefire lines, maintain a buffer zone and undertake humanitarian activities.
