Turkey welcomed the visit of Michel Suleiman, President of Lebanon, to Damascus on August 13th and 14th, 2008 upon the invitation extended by Bashar al-Assad, President of Syria, a formal statement said on Friday.
The statement by Turkish Foreign Ministry said, "the two heads of state have agreed on the establishment of diplomatic relations at ambassadorial level and have discussed various topics, including the demarcation of the joint border, in the course of the meetings that took place during this visit which constitutes the highest level of contact between the two countries since 2005." It said Turkey deemed this visit as a significant development for the establishment of peace, tranquility and stability in the region.
"Turkey will continue to support steps in this direction as it has done so until this day," it added.
