'Turkey would procure half of army's needs till 2011'

Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan said on Tuesday that Turkey gradually played a more active foreign policy role in addition to its geopolitical and strategic position.

Speaking at a signing ceremony for Defense Industry Undersecretariat National Tank Project Contract, Erdogan said, "Turkey assumes an active role in solution of many regional and global problems. Turkish Armed Forces has to have a national defense industry that may help armed forces to improve its supplies and capabilities.

Our target is to fulfill the activities in question by utilizing facilities and capabilities of the national industry as far as we can. Many projects took effect in recent years to meet the needs of Turkish Armed Forces. I would like to reaffirm my belief that we will exceed our target to procure at least half of the needs of the Turkish Armed Forces with local resources till the year 2011."
