Turkey's Energy Minister says no rise in natural gas price in Jan '10

Turkish Energy and Natural Resources Minister Taner Yildiz has said the government would make no price hike in natural gas in January 2010.

"The price hike in natural gas in January will be zero percent for households and industrial sector. But that is until February. The automatic pricing mechanism will then decide the hike," Taner Yildiz told a press meeting on Thursday on the occasion of passage through the Istanbul Strait of a drilling platform, which will explore oil and natural gas for the Turkish Petroleum Corporation and Brazil's Petrobras in the Black Sea.

Turkey is heavily dependent on foreign suppliers of oil and natural gas and it has to import around 65 percent of primary energy to meet needs.

"No government wants to make price hikes but the situation is completely dependent on foreign resources," Yildiz said.
