Turkey's EU bid causes excitement from Bangladesh to Mideast: FM

Turkish Foreign Minister Ali Babacan said Tuesday that had Turkey joined the European Union (EU) today, it would become the sixth biggest economy in the union.

Babacan attended a conference at the Pierre Werner Institute in Luxembourg on Tuesday and talked about contributions Turkey would make to the EU when it joins the union.

Turkey's membership in the EU would not bring a burden on the EU but rather contribute a value to the union, Babacan said.

Income per capita and exports in Turkey showed a great rise in the past few years, Babacan said.

Within such economic developments, Turkey has met some of the requirements of the Euro Maastricht criteria, Babacan said.

Turkey's membership in the EU will bring dynamism to the union and EU's competitiveness would increase with Turkey, Babacan said.

Turkish economy is more and more getting integrated with the economy of the EU, Babacan said.

Impressions of Turkey's EU bid

The number of foreign investments coming into Turkey from the EU countries has increased dramatically in the past few years, Babacan said.

Turkey's EU membership process has caused excitement in a geography extending from Bangladesh to the Middle East, Babacan said.

Turkey's economic and social reforms are being closely watched by many countries in this geography, Babacan noted.

Attempts by some countries to block entry negotiations of Turkey have caused disappointment in the minds of the Turkish people, Babacan said.

Babacan stressed that Turkey is making efforts to resolve crisis and problems in the region and especially in the Caucasus and Middle East.

Turkey is a role model as a country that has brought together Islam, democracy and secularism, Babacan said.

Touching on the topic of energy, Babacan said that Turkey is a neighbor to the region that has two-thirds of all natural gas and oil reserves in the world.

Turkey plays the role of a natural bridge for energy resources that the EU needs, Babacan said.

Ali Babacan presented detailed information on energy projects that Turkey is actively involved in.
