First water taxi of Istanbul has started giving service.

Speaking at a ceremony on Friday, Istanbul Mayor Kadir Topbas said the taxis would be among the solutions to overcome the transportation problem of Istanbul.

Topbas said a total of 4 water taxis would be in service and two of them would start to operate in August. "The water taxis will give service at 27 wharfs," he said.

Istanbul Mayor said they were also planning to put helicopter taxi into service soon, "we will construct 110 heliports in various districts of the city for the helicopter taxi service," he added.

Istanbul Sea Buses Corp. earlier said water taxi would operate on demand not on schedule and the people would be able to call water taxi by phone. A water taxi which has a length of 10-12 meters and a width of 4-5 meters is able to carry 10 passengers.
