Turkey's Gul says first visit to add new momentum Mauritanian ties

Turkish President Abdullah Gul and his Mauritanian counterpart Mohamed Ould Abdel Aziz appeared Friday at a joint press conference after their meeting in the Turkish capital, Ankara.

Speaking to reporters, Gul said Abdel Aziz's visit to Turkey would add a new momentum to relations between the two countries, adding that the visit is the first one from Mauritania at the presidential level.

The two presidents discussed ways to boost cooperation between Turkey and Mauritania in political, economic, military and cultural areas, Gul said.

The Turkish president said the two countries extended support to each other in international platforms, adding that a military cooperation agreement was signed between the two countries in 2002 and Mauritanian officers had received training and participated in exercises carried out by the Turkish Armed Forces.

Gul said Turkey and Mauritania were considering to open embassies in each other's countries, which he said would help boost bilateral relations.

Gul also said Turkey appreciated Mauritania's efforts for democratization, expressing belief that the country would develop in every field.
