Gul's meeting with Turkish businessmen was closed to press.

On Friday, the second of his four-day state visit to Russia, Gul will meet Russian President Dimitry Medvedev.

Gul is also scheduled to meet Boris Gryzlov, Speaker of the lower house of the parliament, known as "State Duma", and Sergey Mironov, Chairman of the Council of Federation of the Federal Assembly of the Russian Federation.

On Saturday, Gul will travel to the Republic of Tatarstan of the Russian Federation. Gul will have a meeting with Tatar President Mintimer Shaymiyev in the capital city of Kazan.

Gul's visit was planned as a formal visit, however, Kremlin offered to elevate it to a state visit. Turkish and Russian officials are expected to discuss cooperation on energy and Blue Stream II, or the South-European gas pipeline, which would make Turkey a transit point for Russia's exports to the EU.

Turkish officials are also expected to bring up the imbalance in trade volume between the two countries, which is around 37.8 billion USD and consists mostly of Russia's exports, and ask to adjust it.

Gul's talks are also expected to focus on tight controls over Turkish trucks at the Russian border, construction of a nuclear power plant in Turkey, and Russia's stance and support to Turkey over Cyprus problem.
