Turkey's top tourist region hopes record in 2010

Antalya, Turkey's top tourist region on the Mediterranean coast, saw a significant rise in the number of tourists in January which sparked hopes for record tourist crowd in 2010.

The number of tourists arrived in Antalya Airport increased 31 percent in January, when compared to the same month of 2009, to exceed 140,000, officials said on Tuesday.

Turkey was the only country that raised the number of people preferring it as a tourist destination in 2010 despite the economic crisis. Turkey's tourism industry grew by 2.81 percent despite a global economic recession which forced the global tourism industry to shrink by 4.3 percent in 2009. Over 27 million foreign tourists visited Turkey in eleven months of last year.

"Figures give hope for 2010," Ibrahim Acar, an official of country's tourism ministry, said.

"If figures continue this trend during the whole year, we can shatter the records," Acar said.
