Turkish Chief of General Staff Gen. Ilker Basbug met Monday Admiral James Stavridis, Supreme Allied Commander Europe (SACEUR).

The meeting took place in the Belgian city of Mons where the Supreme Headquarters Allied Powers Europe (SHAPE) is located.

Basbug and Stavridis discussed Turkey-NATO relations, joint activities and exercises as well as several military issues, especially operations in Afghanistan, military sources said.

U.S. commander Stavridis assumed duties as the Supreme Allied Commander Europe in early summer 2009 and has become the first navy officer to be appointed to this post.

Meanwhile, Turkish military chief Gen. Basbug will pay a two-day formal visit to Germany at the invitation of German Chief of Staff Gen. Wolfgang Schneiderhan starting Tuesday, sources said.
