Turkish association established for artificial organ biomaterials

Turkish researchers have established an association for development and manufacture of biomaterials used in artificial organs in Turkey.

The "Biomaterials and Tissue Engineering Association" was established by a group of academicians from the Middle East Technical University (METU), the Hacettepe University, the Ankara University, the Ege University, the Bilkent University and the Yeditepe University.

The association will work for development and manufacture of biomaterials in Turkey.

Professor Vasif Hasirci of the METU Department of Biological Sciences, who became the chairman of the association, told the A.A, "biomaterials are generally used in bone plates, bone cement, artificial ligaments and tendons, dental implants, blood vessel prostheses, heart valves, skin repair devices, cochlear replacements and contact lenses. Biomaterials must be compatible with the body. Their biocompatibility speeds up the process of healing."

"The biomaterial industry could not develop in Turkey except for some limited applications in medicine. Our association aims at development of this new biomaterial science, which is of strategic importance in the United States and some other industrialized countries, in Turkey. We will bring together firms manufacturing medical devices or importing them, and turn academic researches into commercial products with the help of those firms," he said.

Hasirci added that the market share of biomaterials was expected to reach 140 billion USD in 2013.
