Turkish Mediterranean city of Antalya will run to host the Expo, one of the world's biggest fair orgazinations, in 2017 or 2023, city's chamber of commerce and industry announced on Wednesday.
Kemal Ozgen, Chairman of Antalya Chamber of Commerce and Industry, said that his chamber aims to crown the improving tourism industry of Antalya, which is the major tourist destination in Turkey.
More than 7 million tourists visited Antalya in 2007, and over 1 million tourists arrived in Antalya in the first four months of 2008. The number of tourists visiting Antalya is expected to exceed 9 million this year. Total number of tourists to Turkey was around 23 million last year.
Ozgen said Antalya, the flagship of Turkish tourism industry, was the most advantageous city to host the international event with its fame around the world and tourism infrastructure.
Another Turkish city Izmir, on the Aegean coast, competed with Italy's Milan this year to host the Expo 2015 but lost the competition.
Delegates of the Bureau of International Exhibition had chosen Milan in a voting held in March.
Expo is cited as the third largest event in the world in terms of economic and cultural impact, after the FIFA World Cup and the Olympic Games.
