Turkish court starts hearing teenage girl murder case

An Istanbul court started Thursday to hear a case regarding the murder of a teenage girl.

Cem Garipoglu, suspect of the murder of Munevver Karabulut, was brought to the Bakirkoy Court House under tight security measures.

Karabulut's relatives and friends protested the suspected killer outside the court house, as the trial began.

17-year-old Munevver Karabulut was dumped in a trash container in Istanbul's Etiler district after being decapitated on March 3, 2009. Her body inflicted with multiple stab wounds was found stuffed in a suitcase. Her head was found in a guitar case in a separate trash container nearby. Her killing created a nationwide outrage while friends and other people launched one of the largest internet campaigns ever seen in Turkey.

Suspect of the murder Cem Garipoglu was arrested by Turkish security forces on September 17, 2009.
