Turkish Cypriot president urges EU to take initiative

The Turkish Cypriot president urged on Wednesday the European Union (EU) to take initiative for settlement of Cyprus problem.

President Mehmet Ali Talat of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) said the EU should take initiative to encourage the Greek Cypriot administration for a settlement.

"I will ask European Commission's President Jose Manuel Barroso and the EU to take an active role," Talat told reporters on route to Brussels.

Talat will be the guest of Barroso during his stay in Brussels.

"I will express our perspective on Cyprus controversy, and explain Barroso our targets in upcoming intensified negotiations," he said.

Talat and Greek Cypriot leader Demetris Christofias will hold six intensified meetings as of January 11. They will meet for three days as of January 11, and then meet again on January 25 and hold negotiations for three consecutive days.
