Turkish Cyprus to debate resolution on Treaty of Guarantee

The Turkish Cypriot parliament will convene in an extraordinary session on Wednesday to discuss a resolution on the Treaty of Guarantee's indispensable role in the solution process in Cyprus.

The resolution, which is expected to be approved by all 5 political parties represented in the parliament of Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC), will highlight the sensitivities of the Turkish Cypriot nation, officials said on Tuesday.

Holding a press conference on the issue, TRNC's Parliament Speaker Hasan Bozer said that the Greek Cypriot party tried to sabotage the ongoing talks in the island while Turkish Cypriots displayed the will to solve the problem.

Pointing to Greek Cypriot parliament's recent decision which claimed that the Treaty of Guarantee was "unacceptable and invalid", Bozer said the treaty was "an indispensable red line" for the Turkish Cypriot nation, adding that TRNC's parliament would adopt a decision against the Greek Cypriot parliament's ruling during tomorrow's gathering.

In recent weeks, the Greek Cypriot House of Representatives has approved unanimously a resolution reading that in Cyprus, as a member state of the European Union, there should not be provisions for guarantors or guarantees.
