The forest fire near the ancient site of Olympos in the southern Turkish province of Antalya has been contained.

A local forestry official told the A.A on Wednesday that the fire in the woodland near the historical site of Olympos was taken under control although the site's location on a rocky place in the hills hampered their efforts to tackle the fire.

Fuat Nur added that 100 hectares of woodland were burnt down to ashes in the fire.

The fire which broke out in Serik town of Antalya, Turkey's tourism heartland, on July 31st destroyed at least 60 houses, dozens of farming buildings, a school and a mosque in Manavgat and Serik towns. Six villages were evacuated. Two people died in the fire. The fire also destroyed livestock in the villages and millions of trees in the woodlands.
