A Turkish fisherman was killed in the Black Sea near the northwestern city of Kırklareli yesterday when Bulgarian coast guards opened fire on his vessel because it had allegedly crossed into Bulgarian waters, Today's Zaman reported.

Engin Ercan, 40, set out from the village of Beğendik in Kırklareli's Demirköy district with his two brothers to go fishing yesterday morning.

Bulgarian coast guards who had been closely following the brothers for some time opened fire on them for allegedly entering Bulgarian waters illegally.

Ercan died at the scene, while his two other brothers were taken into custody by the Bulgarian coast guards.

As of last night, Ercan's body was still being held in Bulgaria while his detained brothers were being sent to the Turkish Embassy in Bulgaria.

Turkey has launched an investigation into the incident.
