The speaker of the Pakistani parliament has ordered an inquiry into why the national flag depicted on the new 1,000 Rupee banknote is not green but red and carries a close resemblance to its Turkish equivalent.

The probe follows a protest by a member of the ruling Pakistani Muslim League, Rashid Akbar Khan, against the design, which while including Pakistan's - and Turkey's - crescent and star emblem, also lacks the distinguishing white stripe on the flag's left-hand border.

"It is a big mistake and it should be rectified," Khan said, the Dawn newspaper reported.

A senior finance official told the National Assembly that a cabinet committee had approved the note, which went into circulation in late 2006 and is worth the equivalent of 16 dollars.
