Turkish FM says Cyprus new partnership to contribute to peace

Turkish Cypriot president said on Thursday that Turkey fully supported the Cyprus negotiation process and its assistance was very important for Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC).

TRNC President Mehmet Ali Talat and Turkish Foreign Minister Ali Babacan held a joint press conference in Lefkosa, TRNC.

Full-fledged negotiations have been under way for a resolution to the Cyprus issue and Turkey extended a great assistance to the negotiation process, Talat said.

"We are sure that Turkey's assistance will continue," he said.

Babacan said, "there is a full consensus between Turkey and TRNC. Turkey will keep supporting efforts for a fair and lasting solution in regard to the Cyprus issue."

A new partnership which would be formed by two founder states having political equality would constitute the basis of the solution, he said.

Babacan said, "new partnership will contribute to tranquility, prosperity and stability in the region."

Turkish Cypriot people, who exerted great efforts for a fair and lasting solution, have been still facing international isolations and these isolations must be ended, he said.

Replying to a question on the statement of Greek Cypriot leader Demetris Christofias who said that if the situation on the island was not to change, Turkey could not join the EU, Babacan said the parties should assume a positive attitude regarding the negotiation process and focus on a solution.
