"2009 began with the incidents in Gaza. We are both saddened and tired due to these developments," Babacan said while responding to the questions of press corps aboard the plane on his way to Kosovo.
Asked to comment on the situation in Gaza, Babacan said, "Turkey has assumed four missions in the United Nations Security Council," and listed them as Congo Committee, north Korea Committee, Afghanistan Committee and Counter-Terrorism Committee.
"Of course, we would not have wanted to start our term in the UN Security Council with this undesirable development in Gaza," Babacan said, adding that Turkey has focused its attention on diplomacy and wants Palestinian leader Mahmoud Abbas to sit at negotiation table with a strong posture.
Babacan stressed that the stance of UN Security Council was important to facilitate a cease-fire in a short period of time.
Foreign Minister Babacan stated that Turkey was closely monitoring public polls in Israel and this was very important.
"Hamas indicated that Gaza should be a normal place to live in and that guarantees regarding a cease-fire are prominent. When a cease-fire is signed it is important to see who would ensure it, which countries will take part, and how borders would be controlled. These are some of the issues being discussed," Babacan also said.
