Turkish Gen: No trilateral mechanism between Turkey, US and Iraq

Gen. Ergin Saygun, the deputy chief of Turkish General Staff, said Tuesday there was not any trilateral mechanism between Turkey, the United States and Iraq regarding fight against terrorism.

"We may call it a hot line among (David H.) Petraeus (commander of multinational force in Iraq), vice chairman of U.S. joint chiefs of staff (James E. Cartwright) and me for the coordination of operational matters," Saygun told Turkish reporters in Italian capital of Rome.

Gen. Saygun accompanied Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan during his visit to the United States. Erdogan met U.S. President George W. Bush on Monday.


FIGHT AGAINST TERRORISM IS A PROCESS

On the other hand, Saygun underlined importance of intelligence in countering terrorism.

"Fight against terrorism is a process, and intelligence is required and shared in this process," he told reporters.

Gen. Saygun said Turkey and the United States had expressed their determination in fight against terrorism.
