The Turkish government increased taxes on many items from tobacco products, alcoholic beverages and oil to vehicle ownership.

A Council of Ministers decree, published in the Official Gazette on Thursday, the last day of 2009, brought 3.3 percent increase in motor vehicles tax.

Proportional tax on tobacco products and alcoholic beverages were raised to 63 percent from 58 percent.

Price of unleaded gas rose 7.1 percent while prices of diesel fuel and liquified petroleum gas (LPG) were up 6.5 percent.

Duties and taxes on many other items and public services were also raised.
