Turkish govt says to strengthen fight against corruption

Council of Ministers accepted a strategy to strengthen fight against corruption as well as increase transparency.

Following the Council of Ministers meeting on Thursday, the ministers decided to take measures --with the contribution of non-governmental organizations-- to eliminate the factors raising the corruption by the new strategy as well as by increasing effective inspection and institutional capacity.

The strategy was prepared by Turkish State Minister and Deputy Prime Minister Cemil Cicek.

Accordingly, coordination will be provided among related institutions in fight against corruption, and the affectivity of inspection, legal proceedings and punishment will be raised, while social awareness will be increased.

After the strategy is issued, an executive board will be shaped with participation of deputy undersecretaries of justice, interior, finance, labor & social security ministries and representatives of non-governmental organizations.

Minister Cicek told A.A that the government had been exerting important efforts against corruption since 2002, and recorded a certain progress.

He said that there was not only one measure in fight against corruption, adding that new arrangements could be made if necessary.
