Turkish govt seeks extension of anti-piracy Somalia mandate

The Turkish government submitted Friday a motion to the parliament asking extension of mandate for anti-piracy mission off Somalia by another year.

The parliament will hold a debate on the motion on Tuesday. The mandate expires on February 10.

Under the existing mandate, Turkey has sent several frigates to Gulf of Aden and Arab Sea, each serving on a rotating basis to fight rampant maritime piracy.

Turkish frigates have participated in international missions under the Standing NATO Maritime Group 2 to hunt Somali pirates in the area.
