The Ditib Turkish Islamic organization in Germany Friday condemned threats issued against the life of Ralph Giordano, a writer of Jewish origin who has criticized the Koran and Islam.
The threats issued against the 84-year-old writer some weeks ago were "unacceptable and utterly condemned by Ditib," the organization said.
Giordano, who styles himself an atheist, has in the past said the Koran could not be reconciled with the German constitution.
Ditib said that even if Giordano's statements were polemical, defamatory of Islam and the Koran and ignorant, this did not justify the threat of violence.
"Islam is a peaceful religion," said the organization, which claims to represent a large section of the 3.2 million Muslims resident in Germany.
Giordano has in particular opposed Ditib's intention to build a large mosque in Cologne.
Last month, Giordano said mosques were "popping up like mushrooms, named after Ottoman conquerors" all over Germany.
