Turkish Minister meets US science envoy Zewail

Turkish State Minister Mehmet Aydin met with Dr. Ahmed Zewail, member of U.S. Council of Advisors on Science & Technology, in Ankara on Thursday.

The meeting was closed to the press.

Dr. Zewail's visit aims at boosting scientific and technologic cooperation between the two countries.

Nobel laureate Dr. Zewail will proceed to Egypt, Lebanon and Jordan from Turkey.

Dr. Ahmed Zewail is one of the three "science envoys" appointed by U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton.

She named, in November 2009, Dr. Bruce Alberts, Dr. Elias Zerhouni and Dr. Ahmed Zewail as the first U.S. Science and Technology Envoys.

During his three-day visit to Turkey, Dr. Zewail will hold meetings with high-level officials and also visit Turkish Scientific and Research Board (TUBITAK) as well as ODTU and Bilkent universities in Ankara.

Dr. Zewail is an Egyptian-American scientist, and the winner of the 1999 Nobel Prize in Chemistry for his work on femtochemistry. He is the Linus Pauling Chair Professor Chemistry and Professor of Physics at the California Institute of Technology.
