Turkey's State Minister and Chief Negotiator Egemen Bagis has said that the Turkey considered EU membership one of its strategic targets.

Turkey's State Minister and Chief Negotiator Egemen Bagis has said that the Turkey considered EU membership one of its strategic targets, and added, "Turkish people believed that the EU membership made valuable contribution to human rights and democracy."

Bagis received Martin Schulz, president of the Socialist Group at the European Parliament, and the accompanying delegation.

Bagis said at the meeting that Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan's recent visit to Brussels was the sign of Turkish government's determination to maintain the reform process.

"The EU is a strategic target for Turkey. Turkish people believed that the EU membership made valuable contribution to human rights and democracy. Our government is determined to speed up reforms following the local elections in March," Bagis added.
