Turkish opposition appeals to top court for social security law

Turkey's main secularist opposition party appealed on Thursday to country's highest court to seek annulment and stay to a number of provisions of a recently passed social security law.

Republican People's Party (CHP) asked the Constitutional Court to examine some fifteen articles of the law on social insurances and general health insurance and to rule for stay of execution until the appeal was concluded.

The court annulled in December 2006 some 23 articles of an earlier "reform" package following another appeal by the CHP and former President Ahmet Necdet Sezer.
