Turkish, Palestinian presidents discuss on phone Gaza situation
Palestinian President has telephoned his Turkish counterpart to convey latest developments after the Israeli withdrawal from Gaza.
Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas has telephoned his Turkish counterpart Abdullah Gul to convey latest developments after the Israeli withdrawal from Gaza, Gul's press office said in a statement on Friday.
Abbas briefed Gul about the current humanitarian and the political situation, and he conveyed his views to the Turkish president over the need to form a unity government and the reconstruction of the Gaza Strip.
Gul told Abbas in return that Turkey would continue to exert efforts and its diplomatic attempts to find a viable and a fair solution to the Palestinian problem, expressing the importance of unity and reconciliation among Palestinians.
The two leaders "agreed that the close engagement of U.S. President Barack Obama to the problem and his appointment of a new envoy offer an important window of opportunity which should be exploited by all sides," the statement said.
