Parliament Speaker Koksal Toptan is expected to call the roll to see whether there are 367 MPs (two-thirds of 550 MPs, the quorum needed to start presidential election process in the parliament).
Second round of voting will start in case quorum of 367 MPs are ensured. Justice & Development (AK) Party MP Abdullah Gul, Nationalist Movement Party (MHP) MP Sabahattin Cakmakoglu, and Democratic Left Party (DSP) MP Tayfun Icli are running for the president.
In the first round of voting on August 20th, Gul won 341 votes, while Cakmakoglu got 70 votes and Icli gained 13 votes.
Thus, none of the candidates won 367 votes, required to be elected the new president, in the first round.
In case none of the candidates win necessary votes, the 3rd round of voting will take place on August 28th. In the third round, the candidate who wins 276 votes (the simple majority) will be elected the 11th president of Turkey.
