Turkish parliament will elect its new speaker on Thursday.
MPs began declaring their candidacies for parliament speaker after the oath-taking ceremony on August 4th.
The deadline for application is midnight August 8th.
Justice and Development (AK) Party deputy from Zonguldak Koksal Toptan was named as a candidate for the speaker of parliament by AK Party deputies.
The parliament will convene at 3:00 p.m. on Thursday for the first round of the election. Prior to the election, the Consultative Board meeting will be held and it will be proposed to hold all rounds for the election the same day.
If the proposal is accepted, rounds will be held till the new speaker is elected.
Under the parliamentary by-laws, the new speaker will be elected with secret ballot. A candidate has to win a two-thirds majority in order to get elected parliament speaker in the first two rounds.
In the third round absolute majority (276) will be sought. If absolute majority is not attained in the third round, two candidates who get the highest number of votes in the third round will compete in the fourth round.
And the candidate who receives the highest number of votes in the fourth round will be elected as new speaker.
Two elections will take place for parliament speaker in a legislative period (5 years). The first one will remain in the office for two years while the second one's tenure will last for 3 years.
