Turkish parliament approved on Tuesday a motion authorizing the government to send naval forces to the Gulf of Aden to protect commercial vessels from pirates.
The motion authorizes the Turkish government to send naval forces to the Gulf of Aden, Somalian coastal waters, Arabian Sea and adjacent regions.
Turkish forces to be deployed under the authorization will not participate at a ground operation against pirates on Somalian soil.
In 2008, pirates attacked 111 ships in the waterway, hijacking 42 of them and receiving tens of millions of dollars in ransoms.
hree of these vessels were Turkish cargo ships.
