Turkish President Abdullah Gul attended on Thursday a dinner hosted by his Albanian counterpart Bamir Topi as part of a formal visit to capital Tirana.
Delivering a speech at the dinner, Gul said the Balkans should no more be associated with instability, adding that common values were powerful enough to overcome differences among the region's nations.
"The Balkans should become a stable, peaceful and prosperous region where concrete and strong projects of cooperation and integration are put in place," Gul said.
Gul said close cooperation between the region's countries would speed up integration process with the European Union.
"Turkey considers the EU enlargement as a necessity for the Union's global role and for its prosperous future. And Turkey believes that EU must show the enlargement is based on common values instead of artificial borderlines in order to overcome the bias against it," Gul said.
The Turkish president said his country was "proud" of being a NATO ally with Albania and welcomed Albania's progress towards becoming a member of the EU.
